Coast Guard Cutters
Cutters
A "Cutter" is basically any Coast Guard vessel 65 feet in length or greater,
having adequate accommodations for crew to live on board.
Larger cutters (over 180 feet in length) are under control of
Area Commands (Atlantic Area or Pacific Area). Cutters at or
under 180 feet in length come under control of District Commands.
Cutters, usually have a motor surf boat and/or a rigid hull
inflatable boat on board. Polar Class icebreakers also carry
an Arctic Survey Boat (ASB) and Landing Craft.

The Coast Guard also operates approximately 1,400 boats -- vessels under 65 feet in length.
April 2003. One hundred off-the-shelve motor boats were ordered
delivered during April for homeland security to check shipping in
harbors. These are to replace boats sent south for the winter
that now have to go back to the Great Lakes. Probably similar to this
picture.
Ship Facts
110-foot Patrol Boat (WPB), Photo
Island Class - 49 boats in service ; 8 ordered to
Persian Gulf.
Length: 110 feet ; Beam: 21 feet ; Displacement: 154 tons
Power plant: two diesel engines ; Commissioned: 1986-1992
110-foot Island-class Patrol Boats are a Coast Guard modification of
a highly successful British-designed patrol boat. With excellent range
and seakeeping capabilities, the Island Class, all named after U.S.
islands, replaced the older 95-foot Cape-class patrol boats.
These cutters are equipped with advanced electronics and navigation
equipment. These aging cutters are slowly being rebuilt as 123' cutters with a
stern ramp.

Famous Class, Medium Endurance Cutter - WMEC - 13 ships
Length : 270 feet ; Speed : 20 knots (23.5 miles per hour)
Personnel : 14 officers, 8 CPO's, 83 enlisted
Power Plant : Two ALCO Main Diesel Engines, shaft hp 7,000 total
These multipurpose cutters were designed for general patrol duties and
are fitted with a telescoping helicopter hangar. The ships have not
been entirely satisfactory because they are crowded, slow, and
their seakeeping qualities are poor. They were originally intended
to accommodate a number of additional weapons systems for wartime
escort service, but these plans were unrealistic. Although designed
for 14-day patrols, they are commonly forced to carry out 90-day
patrols off Haiti.
378-foot High Endurance Cutter (WHEC) Photo
Hamilton class -- number in service : 12 . Two ordered to Persian Gulf.
Commissioned: 1967-1972
Length: 378 feet ; Beam: 43 feet ; Displacement: 3,250 tons
Power Plant: Two diesel engines/two gas turbine engines, variable pitch screws.
The Hamilton class cutters have unique capabilities in maritime law enforcement, port security and search and rescue, plus its modern command, control and communications equipment make the cutter an important asset for this mission. Equipped for helicopter deployment.
