From a naval perspective, after the Battles around Guadalcanal, Nov '42, both sides retire to rebuild after disastrous loses. The US builds more and overwhelms the Japanese Navy in fleet actions in June and October of 1944.

U.S.N. losses to Kamikaze around the Philippines and Okinawa were horrific with 15 destroyers sunk plus lots of smaller ships, and 200 larger and smaller ships damaged, some too badly to be repaired before war-end. Bismarck Sea (CVE-95) by Kamikaze, and, of course, Indianapolis (CA-35) was torpedoed days before the surrender with great loss of life.
