* -- This is taken from the end-of-war lists published by Jane's Fighting Ships of World War II, 1946, as reprinted many times. The opportunities for error are large : Lend lease status ((8 kaiser cves are missing); ships sunk with new ships of same name; ships damaged (300 allied warships were damaged from kamikazes), repaired after the war (franklin), unrepaired and scrapped after the war (many destroyers; ships building but not finished; launched (christened) but not commissioned midway class); ships commissioned but not yet fitted for service; ships fitted but not yet in the fight. I have arbitrarily tried to cut off at launch date before August 15, 1945. This shuts out those still building, but includes some ships certainly not yet ready to fight, although they would have been ready to contribute to Operation Downfall : Olympic & Coronet .
